From housepainter to America’s Funniest Handyman.
Tommy Highland is a lifelong student of the trades. He’s been working with tools in hand since he left college. Tommy was a straight A student as a Drama Major at SDSU, but quickly found his way the job site as a way to make money while he dabbled in and out of acting and stand up comedy.
Raised in Northern California, he started off as a painter of Victorian homes, then found his way into pool service and repairs for 6 years before finding his true love of carpentry. After a few years as a carpenter, Tommy started his own remodeling company, Highland Innovations, Inc., which he ran successfully for 10 years.
After 10 years owning his own remodeling company, Tommy grew bored, put down his hammer and followed an opportunity to join the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers as a telecommunications lineman and installer in Philadelphia and did that for 10 years.
Almost 50 years old now, Tommy continues to dabble in all trades as America’s Funniest Handyman, making DIY Videos that are both hilarious and informative, as well as providing on-site repairs to locals and virtual advice to homeowners all around the world.
As a headlining stand up comedian and black belt improviser, Tommy never liked how utterly boring the world of Do-It-Yourself TV had become. “Why does every DIY video and remodeling tv show have to be so mind-numbing?” he would frequently ask himself.
Finally at the beginning of 2020, he started making his own DIY videos that allow you to laugh while you learn to work on your home. And just like that, America’s Funniest Handyman was born, and the rest will make history.
